One major hurdle organizations face is that much of the organizational \u2018metadata\u2019 they need to leverage their data assets remains in \u2018analog\u2019 format (such as paper documents) or is scattered across systems.<\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; custom_margin=&#8221;||5px|||&#8221;]<p>I frequently describe this metadata in articles and books as an Organization\u2019s \u2018digital DNA\u2019. It includes the following data-sets:<\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<ul>\n<li><strong>Locations<\/strong>\u2014The places where the organization operates from.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Organizations<\/strong>\u2014The company structures in law (such as groups, companies, sales organizations, branches, affiliates etc.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Organizational Units<\/strong>\u2014 The hierarchical structures that define where roles exist such as companies, divisions, business units, departments, teams, work groups etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>People, Roles and Portfolios<\/strong>\u2014Details of the people that work for (or on behalf of) the organization, the roles they discharge and the portfolios they are responsible for.<\/li>\n<\/ul>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;-48px|auto||auto||&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;5px|||||&#8221;][et_pb_column _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<p>Note that it\u2019s important to differentiate between people and roles given that people tend to be more transitory than roles. This is why most policy documents reference roles and not the names of individuals.<\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; custom_margin=&#8221;-11px|||||&#8221;]<ul>\n<li><strong>Systems and Data<\/strong>\u2014What systems exist and what data they hold.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Capabilities and Processes<\/strong>\u2014Describing the core capabilities of the enterprise (i.e. what it does) and the processes that are used to fulfill them (i.e. how it\u2019s done)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Suppliers<\/strong>\u2014The suppliers of the enterprise.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sales Territories<\/strong>\u2014The places where the enterprise does business.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disciplines<\/strong>\u2014The \u2018things it does\u2019 (normally the product lines and portfolios of the business.<\/li>\n<\/ul>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;-46px|auto||auto||&#8221;][et_pb_column _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<p>It\u2019s extremely rare for enterprises to possess all of this information and the data linkages between them in a single system and yet it\u2019s essential to compare and contrast operational data through the lens of this metadata ecosystem.<\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; custom_margin=&#8221;||30px|||&#8221;]<p>To example this, if a sales executive is reviewing sales performance, they might reasonably want to know which teams are delivering the best results, the sales territory that is doing the best (so they can find out how and seek to replicate that success), the processes that are resulting in the majority of the cost of sale etc. Without this metadata to frame the landscape of insights, many of the questions executives want to be answered remain on the \u2018no can do\u2019 list.<\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<h2>How to Create your Organizational DNA<\/h2>\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; custom_margin=&#8221;-12px||30px|||&#8221;]<p>Most organizations already hold the missing data they need to make sense of operational data and to make their data culture happen. The challenge is that these data resources are fragmented and exist in pockets of IT and operational silos across the enterprise.
