Full-time workers are expensive, and hidden within every contract are downstream \u2018costs of change\u2019 whenever resourcing demands fluctuate causing demands for new competencies. So-called \u2018gig workers\u2019 offer employers greater workforce management flexibility married with lower operating costs and risks. Business bosses found, to their general surprise, that the drop in productivity and operational challenges (such as data security, IT systems, etc.) weren\u2019t as scary as they\u2019d first thought. \u2018Necessity\u2019 overcame any impracticalities.<\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|40px||41px||&#8221;]<p class=\"BlockQuote\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/smarterwithgartner\/9-tips-for-managing-remote-employees\/\"><span class=\"Link\">Gartner analysis<\/span><\/a> shows that 48% of employees will likely work remotely at least part of the time after the COVID-19 pandemic, compared to 30% pre-pandemic. Additionally, 74% of CFOs intend to increase remote work at their organization after the outbreak. <o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<p>If you\u2019ve been in the workplace for any number of years, you\u2019ll likely have experienced a workplace where no one wants to be the first to go home or the last to arrive. One of the more positive impacts of the remote working trend has been an erosion of old fashioned long working hours culture. It\u2019s no longer possible for workers to be the last man in the office, even were they to want to.<\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|40px||40px||&#8221;]<p class=\"BlockQuote\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2006\/12\/extreme-jobs-the-dangerous-allure-of-the-70-hour-workweek\"><span class=\"Link\">Data<\/span><\/a> published by Harvard Business Review reveals that 62% of high-earning individuals in the US work more than 50 hours a week, 35% work more than 60 hours a week, and 10% work more than 80 hours a week. <o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<p>Whatever the motive for working long-hours, there\u2019s strong evidence to suggest that long working hours are bad for your health.<\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|41px||40px||&#8221;]<p class=\"BlockQuote\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/STROKEAHA.119.025454\"><span class=\"Link\">2019 study<\/span><\/a> from France has found that regularly working long days of ten hours or more increases our risk of having a stroke. Other research has found that employees who work long work hours are likely to have poorer mental health and lower-quality sleep.<span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_column _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<p>While it might make you feel more positive and less guilty when your boss asks what you\u2019re doing outside of work hours, evidence suggests that working long hours does nothing to boost productivity.<\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|40px||41px||&#8221;]<p class=\"BlockQuote\">A Stanford University <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/03\/20\/stanford-study-longer-hours-doesnt-make-you-more-productive-heres-how-to-get-more-done-by-doing-less.html\"><span class=\"Link\">study <\/span><\/a>published in March 2020 found that productivity per hour declines sharply when a person works more than 50 hours a week. <o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_column _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<h2>#3 Humanization (and dehumanization) of workers<o:p><\/o:p><\/h2>\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<p>Some would say, the increased use of online conference calls has made visible the home life challenges of individuals and this has caused some employees to form more connected relationships, while others moved into roles that became increasingly task oriented and more isolated. I have no doubt, some bosses will claim it\u2019s about nurturing the most productivity from workers by guiding them on how to work smarter. Personally, I don\u2019t buy that.<\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|41px||40px||&#8221;]<p class=\"BlockQuote\">Organizations are increasing their passive tracking of employees as their workforce has become remote.
